1,158,287. Uranium hexafluoride. CENTRE D'ETUDE DE L'ENERGIE NUCLEAIRE. 28 Oct., 1966 [26 Nov., 1965], No. 48439/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] Uranium hexafluoride is obtained by treatment of spent nuclear fuel with a gaseous mixture of fluorine and a compound containing fluorine and another halogen at a temperature between the boiling point of said compound and 500‹ C. The fuel may be in the form of an alloy, oxide, or carbide. In examples, uranium dioxide pellets and compact uranium carbide are treated at 200‹ C. or 300‹ C. with a mixture of chlorine trifluoride, fluorine, and nitrogen. The fuel may be mixed with alumina to dissipate heat. A suitable apparatus is described with reference to a drawing. Powdered fuel may be treated as a fluidized bed.
|
