[Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An expendable lance for measuring the temperature, the liquidus arrest value and for withdrawing a sample of molten metal from a bath comprises an expendable tube 12 e.g. of cardboard, a body structure 14 e.g. of sand at one end of the tube 12 and defining a chamber 16 with a passage 60 leading thereinto to enable a sample to be retained and two thermocouples 20, 22, one, 20 being disposed in the chamber 16 to measure the liquidus arrest value of the sample and the other 22 being located at the end of the tube 12 to measure the temperature of the molten metal bath. The tube 12 is adapted to be telescoped over the end of an elongated pipe 114 which forms a lance holder and in this position projections 74, 76 on the lance and carrying electrical connections for lead wires to the thermocouples 20, 22, engage in a female connector screwed to the end of the pipe 114. The female connector is coupled to recording instruments for the thermocouples. A metallic cap 36 covers the thermocouple 22 to protect the U-shaped tube 26 enclosing the thermocouple wires during passage through slag, after which the cap 36 melts. A heat destructible cover 58 e.g. of copper or lowcarbon steel, also covers the passage 60 until it fuses in the melt and a de-oxidizing material such as aluminium wire 116 is provided in the chamber 16. The thermocouple wires may be platinum and platinum-rhodium. In use, after measurement of the molten metal bath temperature using the thermocouple 22, the lance is withdrawn and the liquidus arrest value measured as the sample solidifies using the thermocouple 20. A solidified specimen within the chamber 16 can subsequently be retrieved by sawing through the lance.
