A method of making a staple comprises severing a portion from a metal strip along a first line of severance extending laterally of the strip through a first aperture provided in the strip to form two prongs 25, one on each side of the aperture, with an edge 27 of the aperture providing an edge between bases of the prongs, severing the staple blank from the strip along a second line of severance extending through a second aperture 28, the second line of severance forming two prongs 31 at the other end of the blank with an edge 34 of the aperture providing an edge between bases of the prongs, and forming a staple from the blank by bending the blank laterally at two bend line positions X, X so that at each end of the staple the edge between the prong bases is located either on or between the bend lines. A slide fastener length 20 is fed intermittently across a clenching anvil 4 to have a staple secured as a bottom stop. Punches 1, 15 descend simultaneously to cut off a staple blank 29 and punch an aperture 38 respectively. The blank is carried downwardly by the punch 1 and bent round a mandrel 3. The mandrel is withdrawn and punch 1 carries the staple 29a to a position straddling coupling elements 21 of the fastener length 20. The punch 1 holds tapes 22 of the fastener on the anvil 4 while a punch 13 secures the staple to the length 20.
