1,194,437. Silicided molybdenum surfaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 7, 1968 [Nov. 28, 1967], No. 47391/68. Headings C7B; C7E and C7F. The oxidation resistance of a silicided molybdenum surface is improved by reimersing part of it in a molten bath of sodium hydroxide, which may contain up to 10% by weight of sodium nitrate or nitrite. The coating may be formed electrolytically using a silicon anode or by decomposing chlorosilane. In an example a molybdenum rod is cleaned anodically in sulphuric acid, wetvapour blasted, scrubbed and then the silicide coating is applied electrolytically in a molten fluoride electrolyte at a current density of 0À9 amps 1 dm<SP>2</SP> for 3À5 hours at 675‹ C. After treatment with the molten sodium hydroxide the rod is scrubbed. |
