[Also in Division C1] Seeds are mechanically sown in paper multicellular receptacles containing peat and/or bark humus, with a moisture content below the seed germination limit, and containing other additives. The receptacles are shaken to tighten up the peat litter before sowing and after sowing are wrapped and transported to the site of rearing for unwrapping and watering to start the germination. Multicellular receptacles 3, e.g. made from oblong strips of paper glued with a watersoluble glue at staggered intervals, so that they can be opened out and placed on a support (27), Fig. 4 (not shown), are conveyed under a silo 16, Fig. 2, by a pushing device 24, where they are partially filled with dried peat or a dried mixture of peat and bark humus, sand, sawdust or a litter of mineral origin. The receptacles pass on to a shaking device 18 and then on to sowing devices 19. These include a seed hopper 5, Fig. 1, and a sowing roller 6 which has holes passing one seed into each cell. The roller is rotated by a pinion 8 engaging a rack 9. A counter roller 11 prevents excess seeds leaving the seed tank. Another silo 17 tops up the cells with the litter while a brush 20 removes excess, and a pulling device 25 moves the receptacles to the discharge position 26. The cells on their supports (27) are stacked, covered by a card (28), wrapped, Fig. 4 (not shown), tied, and the packages transported to the place of rearing. Here the base sheets (27) are withdrawn and the seeds watered to start germination and dissolve the glue joining the cells. Additives added to the litter may include lime, which is added in a dissolved form, or powder. |
