Magnetic disc records 10, 11 are mounted on a hub assembly 12 and removably supported on a horizontal shaft 14 such that one of the shaft bearings 53 is disposed at the centre of gravity of the hub assembly. The hub assembly includes an outer sleeve 31 on which the discs are mounted by means of screwed cylindrical spacers 35, 36 and a shorter inner sleeve 32 connected to the outer sleeve by spokes. The hub assembly which is preferably of aluminium is press fitted on a steel sleeve 40 formed with two inner conical surfaces 43, 46 which mate respectively with a cone-shaped surface on the shaft 14 and a conical hub positioning washer 45 when the hub assembly is secured to the shaft by lock nut 47. The spindle housing 23 retains the bearings 53, 54 for supporting the shaft and the outer of these two bearings 53 is disposed substantially at the centre of gravity of the hub assembly. The outer end of the shaft supports the rotor 17 of an electric motor having a stator and casing secured to the spindle housing. In a second arrangement, Fig. 9 (not shown), the motor is disposed at a mid portion of the shaft which supports a hub assembly with disc records at each end. |
