摘要 Detergent alkylates are prepared by polymerizing 4-methylpentene-1 in presence of a catalyst selected from the hydrides of beryllium, aluminium, gallium or iridium and derivatives of these hydrides in which one or more hydrogen atoms are substituted by alkyl or aryl radicals, and condensing a fraction of the polymerization product in the C12-C18 carbon number range with benzene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst. Preferably, polymerization of the feed gas is carried out at 100 DEG to 350 DEG C. at 100 to 3500 p.s.i.g. to produce the dimer 2-isobutyl-6-methylheptene-1 in presence of aluminium triethyl or aluminium tributyl. The feed gas may contain up to 25% by weight of other 4-methylpentenes or n-hexenes. A suitable feed gas is obtained by dimerizing propylene in presence of sodium metal dispersed on an anhydrous potassium compound, e.g. potassium carbonate, as described in Specification 933,253. Condensation of the C12-C18 fraction with benzene is carried out in the liquid phase at - 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. in presence of AlCl3, BF3 or anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. In an example 4-methyl-pentene-1 was dimerized at 160 DEG C. and 1500 p.s.i.g. in presence of aluminium triethyl, and subsequently condensed with benzene, the mole ratio of benzene to dimer being 20: 1 in presence of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. The product material was fractionated to yield a light alkylate boiling below 280 DEG C., a detergent alkylate boiling at 280-305 DEG C. and a heavy alkylate residue boiling above 305 DEG C. The detergent alkylate fraction was converted to a sodium sulphonate in conventional manner and tested for biological degradibility by treating with sewage effluent.ALSO:Detergent alkylates, prepared by polymerizing 4-methylpentene-1 in presence of a catalyst selected from the hydrides of beryllium, aluminium, gallium or indium and derivatives of these hydrides in which one or more hydrogen atoms are substituted by alkyl or aryl groups, and condensing a fraction of the polymerization product in the C12-C18 carbon number range with benzene in presence of an alkylation catalyst are sulphonated by conventional means, e.g. using sulphuric acid or sulphur trioxide to produce detergents having improved properties of biological degradability. The Specification describes the action of the above detergents upon sewage effluent.
