A fluid flow-element 212 (e.g. a tubular heat exchanger) has a pressure inlet 214 and is bypassed by a conduit 210 in which is a resilient variable orifice means 17 which varies in size with the pressure variations at the inlet to maintain a substantially constant flow through the element 212. The orifice means 17 may be an annular disc having an interchangeable backing ring 54 the shape of which determines its flow characteristics. In modifications the disc may have a plurality of radial slits (see Figs. 2-5, not shown) and may have a stamped backing and clamping ring (132, Fig. 9, not shown) the outer edge of which is curled round the rim of the disc. |
