In a high temperature, helium cooled, nuclear reactor, the moderator columns 1, are formed of blocks of isotropic graphite. Each column is supported by tie rods 3 and fixed pillars 4, and is separated from the adjacent pillars by the clearances 7, which allow for thermal expansion and bowing due to irradiation. The circumference of the standpipe, 5, is large enough to include the centre axes of a group of three adjacent columns and the tie rod 3 for each column 1 of each group is carried by the standpipe closure for the respective standpipe. |
