A joint between a battery case or lid, 10 or 30 and a post, 15 or 34, passing through a hole in it is formed by placing liquid or paste sealing material in an annular space 48 surrounding the post and enclosing it with rigid members. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the case is of plastics material, 20 is a steel washer and washer 18 is coloured to indicate the polarity of the post. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the case is of steel, washers 36 and 43 are of steel and washers 38 and 41 are of insulating material. The paste may comprise a polyurethane precursor together with a compound which produces gas either by thermal decomposition or by reaction with the polyurethane precursor so that after the material has been put in place it expands to fill the space. Alternatively the space may be overfilled with epoxyresin so that when the nut is tightened the excess resin is squeezed out. |
