A shoe which is adjustable in width has the lasting margins 15, 17 in at least the forepart and midpart regions free to move transversely between the insole and outsole and has adjusting means which alter the positions of the lasting margins 15, 17 and thus the width of the shoe. The lasting margins 15, 17 are reinforced by spring steel strips 21, 22, 23, 24, the strips 21, 23 being pivoted to the outsole at their toe ends by rivets 31 and the strips 22, 24 being pivoted to the outsole at their heel ends by rivets 33. The strips 21 and 22, 23 and 24 are pivoted together by rivets 28 which can move transversely in slots 29 in the outsole. The strips 21 to 24 are attached to the margins 15, 17 by rivets 19 which move in similar slots. In a first embodiment (Fig. 2) the position of the lasting margins 15, 17 is determined by a U-shaped spring 30 which can be opened up to vary the width of the shoe by cam 32 which can be turned by a screwdriver. In a second embodiment (Fig. 9) the position of the margins 151, 171 is determined by a cable 60 which has its ends secured to the rivets 281 and which passes through rings 62, 64. Tie cords 50 are attached to the rings 62, 64 and are used to adjust the width of the shoe. In a third embodiment (Fig. 12) cables 72, 74 are attached to the rivets 28 and the width of the shoe is adjusted by rotating a drum 70 on which the cables 72, 74 are wound. In all embodiments the shoe may include a waterproofing membrane (not shown) of thin rubber secured to the lasting margins 15, 17 and which extends between the insole and outsole.
