A web cut-off and transfer mechanism for a turret winder includes a rotatable snubber roll which, at the end of a winding cycle, is moved into contact with the web to snap it, rather than cut it, whilst simultaneously urging the new leading edge of the web against a glue-equipped core on a mandrel just entering the winding station of the winder. As shown, one rotating mandrel 17 of a turret 19 having other mandrels 18, 25, 26 carries a core C on which is wound a roll R of a transversely perforated web, e.g. toilet tissue. The web W passes through embossing rollers 11, 12, over a perforating bedroll 13, under a driven roller 15 and over a bar 16 to the core C. A driven roll 20 carrying a pad or snubber 24 is mounted on arms 21 which pivot on the shaft carrying the roller 15 and which oscillate, when so urged by a connecting rod 23 associated at its lower end with a cam arrangement 48, 49, from the position 20 to the position 20<SP>1</SP>; a system of gearing (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) between the cam arrangement 48, 49, the perforating bedroll 13, the roller 15 and the snubber roll 20 ensures that the movement of the arms 21 and rotation of the roll 20 are synchronized with the perforating action of the bedroll 13. Thus, when the roll R has reached a predetermined size the snubber roll 20 is moved into position 20<SP>1</SP>; the pad 24 holds the web W against the glue-equipped core on the new mandrel 18 and as the surfaces of both the roll 20 and core C are moving in a direction opposite to the direction of web travel the web snaps along a perforation-line between cores 17 and 18, leading edge developing a reverse fold which is urged into contact with the new core C. A further roller 59 is provided to apply adhesive to the web so that the tail T formed by the severing action may be glued on to the completed roll R1. |
