Novel N - haloacetyl - 2 - amidoaniline and -2-sulphonamidoaniline derivatives of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each a hydrogen, bromine or chlorine atom, an alkoxy group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms or an alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; X is a sulphonyl or carbonyl group; Y is a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom and Z is a bromine, chlorine or iodine atom, are prepared by reaction of a 2-amidoaniline or 2-sulphonamidoaniline derivative of the general formula with a halogenated acetic acid, a halogenated acetyl halide or a halogenated acetic anhydride. Pharmaceutical compositions having sedative and hypnotic action comprise a N-haloacetyl-2- amidoaniline or -2-sulphonamidoaniline derivative of the first general formula above and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor. |
