Phosphorus-Containing Carboxylic Acid Esters and their use as Lubricating Oil Additives

[Also in Division C5] Phosphorus-containing esters are prepared by either (a) reacting a carboxylic ester having no free hydroxyl groups with an ester of a phosphorus-containing acid, or (b) reacting a reactant or intermediate from which the desired ester is derived and having two or more free hydroxy groups with an ester of a phosphoruscontaining acid to obtain a compound having at least one hydroxyl group which is then reacted with another compound or compounds containing one or more free carboxylic groups necessary to complete the desired ester. In a modification of process (b) the reactant or intermediate having two or more free hydroxy groups is first reacted with a compound which protects one or more of the free hydroxy groups but leaves one or more hydroxy groups unprotected, then reacted with the ester of the phosphorus-containing acid after which the protecting groups are removed and the desired ester is then completed as in (b). Specified esters of a phosphorus-containing acid are: in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are similar or dissimilar hydrocarbyl groups, and when process (b) is used, specified esters are: in which X 1 and X 2 are halogen. Also claimed per se are complex esters of the formulµ: in which RI, RII, RIII, RIV, RV, RVI, RVII, R 2 and R 3 are similar or dissimilar hydrocarbyl groups. In Example (I) a complex ester starting material of the formula: is prepared from adipic acid, neopentyl glycol and caproic acid, and in Example (V) a starting material of the formula: is prepared from trimethylolpropane and caproic acid. In Example (VIII) an intermediate of the formula: is prepared from trimethylolpropane and methyl ethyl ketone.
