The invention comprises copolyamides derived from (A) a polymerized fatty acid having a dimer content in excess of 95%, (B) cyclohexane - 1,4 - dicarboxylic acid, cyclohexane-1,4-diacetic acid or benzene-1,4-diacetic acid and (C) an aliphatic di-primary amine in which at least 4 carbon atoms separate the amine groups. The fatty acid may be saturated or ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated. The specified include a mixture principally comprising oleic and linoleic acids derived from tall oil. Acids (A) and (B) may be replaced by equivalent functional derivatives, e.g. esters, amides, nitriles or chlorides. (B) = 5-75% of (A) + (B). In the amine (C) the amino-groups may be separated by up to 20 carbon atoms. Amines specified include linear and branched alkylene diamines, e.g. 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,5-diaminopentane, 1,6-diaminohexane, 1,6-diaminotrimethylhexane, 1,12-diaminododecane. Alternatively an amine may be derived from an alcohol, in turn derived from a fatty acid, e.g. oleic acid by the oxo process. The ratio of reactants may be such that equal numbers of amino and carboxyl groups are present. The polymerization temperature may be 150-300 DEG C. |
