An electrical power supply unit for a railway coach comprises an A.C. generator 1 having its armature winding connected directly to a rectifier 7 so as to charge a battery 8 and supply the electrical equipment on the coach, the generator 1 being arranged to be driven by an axle of the coach when the coach is in motion and to be driven by a synchronous motor 2, which is adapted to be connected to a three-phase A.C. supply by way of a stabilizing reactor 9, when the coach is stationary for a prolonged period, the armature windings of both the generator 1 and the motor 2 being situated on a common stator. The composite machine is provided with a field winding 10. When the motor 2 is driving the generator 1 the drive between the generator 1 and the axle of the coach is automatically disengaged. In a second embodiment the two windings are in the form of a winding with a suitably positioned tapping.
