A method of cutting across the end grain of a wooden workpiece 3, Fig. 1, comprises traversing across the end of the workpiece two contrarotating peripheral cutters 17, 18 in such manner that the opposite edge portions of the end of the workpiece are each cut by a cutter of which the cutting portion is moving in relation to that edge portion inwardly towards the centre of the end. In the machine described for performing the method the cutters 17, 18 are mounted on and driven by motor heads 1, 2 mounted on a casting 7 so as to be vertically adjustable and to be pivotable about vertical axes by rams 8, 13, respectively. The casting 7 is reciprocated by a pneumatic or hydraulic ram 14 along rods 15, 16 on a casting 4 which is pivotally and slidably mounted on a casting 25 to enable the position and angle of cut of the workpiece end to be adjusted. In operation of the machine the workpiece 3 is advanced to a position opposite the axis of cutter 17. The cutters 17 and 18 are then moved by the rams 8, 13 to cause the cutter 17 to be fed into the end of the workpiece intermediate the width thereof as in Fig. 5. The ram 14 then operates to move the cutters to the left across the end of the workpiece until the cut made by the cutter 18 joins with that made by the cutter 17. The rams 8, 13 then retract the cutters and the ram 14 returns them to their original positions. The cutters may have convex edges to produce grooved end faces in workpieces. |
