A sliding plate type valve is provided with roller bearings 32, 33 and the valve member constitutes a piston responsive to pressure in the valve chamber. As shown, the rollers 33 are carried in the cage 32 and run on bearing plates 30 recessed into the slider 66. Complementary bearing plates 31 are recessed into the valve body on the downstream side. The embodiment shown is operated by control valves 120, 121. From the position shown, valve 120 first applies pressure (a) through passages 115, 133 to move the seat 132 away from the slider, and (b) to remove a locking pin (129), Fig. 3 (not shown) from the rod 55. There after the reversing valve 121 connects the space 67 to exhaust and the slider is pushed into the open position by filling the cylinder space to the left of the slider. In a rapid opening construction for supersonic wind tunnels, the opposite ends of the valve chamber are in communication through, say six, valves (170, 171) at each end with chambers (177, 178), Fig. 7 (not shown). Chamber (177) is pressurized from the inlet (179) whilst chamber (178) is open to atmosphere. The valves (170, 171) are normally held closed by pressure applied through a pilot valve (175) and when released, the slider closes rapidly. Shock is prevented by plugs (168) entering the seat openings of valves (171). A second pilot valve (157) exhaust s the slider chamber at one end to allow it to close under the main fluid pressure.</p>
