Producing metal powders with spherical particles, which may be used in powder metallurgy for making oil-occluding bearings, filters or oil burner wicks, in flame spraying or as catalysts, by contacting a melt of the metal with a substance which gives off hydrogen when it is thermally decomposed (e.g. ammonia, methanol, formaldehyde, urea, methanol amines, ethylene glycol or glycerine), the melt being at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the substance, whereby there is a transitional formation of the metal hydride which decomposes to give the spherical metal particles which are recovered from suspension in the reaction gases. The reactive gas may be diluted with Ar, H 2 or N 2 . Care must be taken that the reactive gas does not decompose prior to contacting the melt surface.
