[Also in Divisions C3, C6 and C7] Articles made of compositions comprising (1) a crystalline polymer of at least a major proportion by weight of a C 2-8 olefin and (2) a compatible adhesion-promoting non-reactive or rosin-modified phenol/formaldehyde resin in amount of 1 to 55 weight per cent, may be coated with conventional paints and lacquers by brushing or spraying. The polyolefin may be polypropylene, block or random copolymers of ethylene with propylene or butene-1, polybutene-1, poly-3-methylbutene-1 or poly-4- methylpentene-1, or a copolymer of an olefin with minor proportions of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate. The phenolic resin may be an acid catalysed condensate of formaldehyde with excess p-phenyl, -t.butyl, -t.amyl or -cyclohexyl phenol, or a rosin acid or rosin ester modified phenol/formaldehyde resin. The compositions may also contain non-ionic surface active agents, stabilisers, plasticisers, pigments and fillers, e.g. talc, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, silicates, mica, bentonite, clay, alumina, carbon black, zinc oxide, lead carbonate, calcium sulphate, diatomaceous earth, wood flour, glass fibres and asbestos. In examples articles moulded from compositions comprising (7) polypropylene, dilauryl thiodipropionate, calcium stearate, 2, 6-di t.butyl-4-methyl phenol, talc and phenol/formaldehyde resin and (8) ethylene/propylene terminal block copolymer, distearyl thiodipropionate, 2, 6-di t.butyl-4-methyl phenol, asbestos and rosin-modified phenol/formaldehyde resin are brush coated with blue paints based on vinyl toluene linseed oil modified alkyd resins. |
