An improved anode for the electrolysis of brine is comprised of a corrosion resistant valve metal substrate and a thin adherent exterior coating consisting esentially of ruthenium oxide and a carbide, the carbide being inert to the electrolysis environment. An especially effective anode has a coating of ruthenium oxide and boron carbide.
