Niobium closure members of flat disc form are pressed against the ends of the tube, the assembly is heated to 1800‹ C., and the discs are quickly heated to 2050‹ C. to cause the alumina to melt and the discs to be bonded to the alumina. In addition to a gas or gases within the tube during bonding, a charge of a metal or metal iodide may be included. The heating may conveniently be effected by a plasma jet torch. |
