Functional fluids compositions comprise (A) as a base stock an organic ester, thioester or amide of phosphorus, and (B) at most 15 vol. per cent of a diester, triester, polyester and/or complex ester, each of a given formula; provided that if (B) is a diester then (A) contains sulphur or nitrogen. The base stock may also contain a minor proportion of an organic silicate or siloxane, a silicone, an aromatic ether or thioether, or a mono- or di-alkyl thiophene. Exhaustive lists are given of the aforementioned components. It is stated that the base stock may also include fluids derived from coal, polyolefins, polyalkylene oxides, mono- and di-alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls, halogenated benzenes and C 1-6 alkyl benzenes, halogenated biphenyl or halogenated diphenyl ether. The fluids may also contain a V.I. improver selected from polyalkyl-acrylates and methacrylates, polyesters, polyurethanes and polyalkylene oxides. |
