Cyclooctatetraene-transition metal complexes are prepared by reacting dialkali metal compounds of cyclooctatetraene with compounds of transition metals of Groups IV (B) , V (B) , VI (B) and VIII (of the Periodic Table of the Commission on Atomic Weights and I.U.P.A.C.), e.g. Ti, Zr, V, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, at 20- 200‹ C. with exclusion of air and humidity. The complexes prepared by the process may have formulµ M 2 (Cot) 3 , M(Cot) 2 or M(Cot) (where M represents metal and Cot represents cyclooctatetraene), and are claimed per se for M=V, Cr, Mo, W, Fe. Disodium, dipotassium or dilithium compounds of cyolooctatetraene (prepared by reacting alkali metal with cyclooctatetraene in the presence of an alkali metal transfer agent, e.g. naphthalene, diphenyl, in e.g. an ether) may be reacted with transition metal halides in a solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon, an ether, or eyclooctatetraene, at 20-100‹ C. The complexes are generally isolated by extraction. Examples describe the preparation of V(Cot) 2 , V 2 (Cot) 3 , Cr 2 (Cot) 3 , Mo 2 (Cot) 3 , W 2 (Cot) 3 and Fe(Cot) (all claimed per se) and also Ti(Cot) 2 and Ni(Cot). |
