The electrodes are thos eused for anodic oxylation of carbon monoxide hydrogen or fuels containing hydrogen in low temperature fuel cells with acid electrolytes. For activation, at least one surface is immersed in an acid electrolyte in the presence of a reducing agent at a potential of 500-800 mv. (positive wrt a hydrogen electrode in the same electrolyte) and maintained at this potential for 5-20 hr. Formaldehyde or hydrazine may be used as reducing agent.
