The invention comprises carbamate esters of the formula <FORM:1081806/C2/1> where R is a C1- 18 alkyl group and n is an integer of 1-4. The compounds are made by reacting a chloropyridinol of the formula <FORM:1081806/C2/2> with an isocyanate RNCO, preferably in the presence of an inert solvent and a tertiary amine catalyst, e.g., triethylamine, trimethylamine and pyridine. Suitable reaction temperatures are in the range 20-40 DEG C. The compounds possess antimicrobial activity (see Division A5). Numerous examples, many relating to the polychlorinated compounds, are provided.ALSO:Carbamate esters of the formula (I) <FORM:1081806/A5-A6/1> where R is a C1-18 alkyl group and n is an integer from 1-4, possess antimicrobial activity and are particularly useful as preservatives for paint and latex compositions. The polychlorinated compounds are the most active compounds. The antimicrobial properties of agar containing 0.05% of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl methylcarbamate and 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro - 4 - pyridyl methyl carbamate are described. The invention also includes pharmaceutical compositions comprising one of the above carbamate esters and a carrier or diluent which find particular use as anthelmintics. |
