Novel hexahydropyrimidine derivatives of the formula where R1 and R2 denote hydrogen atoms or C 1-8 alkyl radicals, R3 and R4 denote C 1-4 alkyl radicals, R5 denotes a hydrogen atom or a C 1-2 alkyl radical, R6 denotes a C 1-6 alkyl radical or an alkoxyalkyl radical having one to four carbon atoms in the alkoxy group and one to six carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and X denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom, are prepared by reacting urea derivatives R1NH.CX.NHR2 with aldehydes R3R4.CHCHO and R5.CHO or acetals thereof in a molar ratio of about 1: 1: 1 in the presence of an alkanol or a mono-C 1-4 alkyl ether of an α,#-alkanediol, at elevated temperature with an addition of an acid, the reaction product being neutralized with a base. The compounds may be converted to the corresponding 4-ureido-hexahydropyrimidines, which are useful as slow acting fertilizers, by reaction with urea.
