A suspension for an operating theatre lamp 26 comprises an horizontal arm 14, which is pivoted about a vertical axis 12 and includes a telescopic device 16 adjustable in direct response to the horizontal component of a force 42 applied to the lamp, and a telescopic vertical arm 18 which is rotatably mounted at the end of the arm 14 and contains a servo-mechanism responsive to the vertical component of the force 42. The servo-mechanism preferably consists of an electric motor (36, Fig. 2, not shown) controlled by a load cell (56) containing strain gauges which sense when the adjusting force 42 is applied, but pneumatic or hydraulic mechanism is also contemplated. The lamp 26 is pivotally mounted in the forked end 24 of an arm 44 which is pivotally connected to the lower end of the arm 18. The fork 24 may carry limit switches 38 to stop the motor. |
