[Also in Division H5] In a heat treatment furnace of the general type disclosed in Specifications 1,076,123 and 934,335, a heat barrier between the heating zone 12 and the cooling zone 27 comprises packs 51 of molybdenum foil shields 54 mounted on supports 55 removably attached to a cylindrical enclosure 13a. The shields are mounted on pins 58 threaded into rivet nuts 62 on the supports 55 with spacer sleeves 60 and supports 55 are attached to L-shaped brackets 63 riveted to the enclosure 13a. Annular shield packs 52 of a similar nature are disposed around the end openings 28, 29 of the enclosure. In a modification (Fig. 9) the shields and support plates are arcuate in shape forming a cylinder on assembly. During heating, pump 17 exhausts the furnace as with the aforementioned Specifications and during cooling non-oxidizing gas supplied at 19 is circulated by the fan 23 over water-cooled wall 32 and cooling tubes 33 on the enclosure, movable reflectors 30, 31 then being opened for access to the heating zone 12. |
