In a non-linear analogue/digital converter of the type comprising a plurality of stages I, II, III (Fig. 9) series connected such that the unknown analogue voltage is applied to the first stage and the output from each stage is fed as the input to the next, one or more output digits being derived from each stage, in the first stage a syn bit P 1 is derived and the input signal after rectification is combined with a bias signal V m / 2 and amplified by two to derive the input signal for the next stage (see Fig. 8 I). Stage II comprises three threshold detectors C 21 , C 22 , C 23 giving "1" outputs when V in exceeds V 5 , V 6 , V 7 (see Fig. 8 II) these output signals being used to generate either two binary bits or one quaternary bit representing the range in which the input to the stage lies. The detectors C 21 , C 22 , C 23 which are Schmitt triggers also control via transistorized OR gates switches SW 21 , SW 22 , SW 23 , SW 24 so that depending in which range the input signal lies it is combined with a bias signal V 1 , V 2 , V 3 or V 4 and amplified by A 1 , A 2 , A 3 or A 4 before being fed to the third stage where a detector C 3 delivers an output signal P 4 in accordance with whether the input is less than or greater than V 10 (see Fig. 8 III), the signal being fed to the next stage via bias circuit B 31 or B 32 and amplifier A 5 or A 6 in accordance with the value of the output digit. |
