Novel N - (diaryl - pyridyl - methyl) - imidazoles of the general formula wherein R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkenyl group, each X is an alkyl or alkenyl group or an electronegative substituent and each n is 0, 1 or 2, and acid addition salts thereof are prepared by chlorination of a diaryl-pyridyl-carbinol of the general formula in an inert organic solvent, removal of the liberated acid with an acid binding agent and reaction of the resulting diaryl-pyridyl-methyl chloride with the stoichiometrically required amount of an imidazole of the general formula in the presence of an acid binding agent, or with an excess of such an imidazole, followed optionally by salification of the product. Pharmaceutical compositions having antimycotic activity comprise, as active ingredient, an N-(diaryl-pyridyl-methyl)-imidazole of the first general formula above or a physiologically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent, and may be administered orally, parenterally or locally.</p> |
