1,263,574. Igniters. ETAT FRANCAIS. 17 April, 1969 [17 May, 1968], No. 19622/69 Heading F3A. [Also in Division C1] An igniter for propellant charges 7 comprises a tube 1 containing a pyrotechnic igniting composition 2, the tube being formed of metal or other material which is combustible or destrucible on firing the igniter, and a detonating fuse 3a which is in contact with a primer 6, the detonating fuse lying along the axis of the tube and comprising a sheath of lead or tin of external diameter 1-3 mm. containing a mixture of a secondary explosive and an ignition booster, the secondary explosive being selected from trimethylene trinitramine (Hexogen), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (Penthrite) and cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine (Octogen), and the ignition booster being selected from calcium silicide, antimony sulphide, iron sulphide, aluminium powder and magnesium powder, the proportion of ingredients by weight in the mixture being from 1/3 to 2/3 secondary explosive to from 2/3 to 1/3 of ignition booster. The tube 1 may be a perforated metal sleeve. Fuse 3 is borne by split cores 4, 4a, rings 4b, 4c, and nuts 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. The charge 2 is black powder; or a mixture of an oxidizing agent and combustible metal; or a composition of nitrocellulose, diphenylamine or ethyl bentralite as stabilizer, and aluminium or magnesium powder, the composition having been rendered porous by the incorporation and subsequent leaching of saltpetre. |
