Vinyl chloride is produced by reacting together ethane, oxygen and hydrogen chloride in the gaseous phase at a temperature of 500-1100‹ F. in the presence of a melt containing cuprous and cupric chlorides. The melt may additionally contain an alkali metal chloride. In a preferred embodiment, the gaseous reactants are passed in countercurrent relationship to the flowing melt, the melt is cooled after contacting the reactants and is then recycled to the reaction. Ethyl chloride, 1,2 - dichloroethane, cis - and trans - 1,2- dichloroethylenes, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene are formed as by-products and may be separated or recycled together with unreacted starting materials.</p> |
