Plastics units are assembled to form a honeycomb-type structure, which may be curved, by bending them to a skin of plastics, plasticsimpregnated fibres or metal in such an arrangement that opposed parallel bonding surfaces are adjacent and placing jointing members so that opposed parallel surfaces thereof either enter between opposed parallel bonding surfaces of the units or embrace them, adhesive being previously applied to the spaces between the opposed parallel surfaces of the units or the members. A second skin is then bonded on top of the units. Each unit may be box-like with an end wall 12 at one end and with flanges 14 at the other end by which the units may be bonded respectively to the outer skins, and with a pair of webs 16, 18 and a pair of webs 20, 22 which extend further outwardly on each side. When units are pushed laterally together, the webs 16, 18 enter between the webs 20, 22 as shown in Fig. 3, and the stems 41 of members 40 are inserted between the pairs of webs 16, 18, after applying measured quantities of cement to the spaces between the webs. The members 40 are preferably T-shaped with heads 42 which, with the end walls 12, form a substantially continuous surface to receive the second skin. In modifications, the pairs of webs are similarly spaced and dimensioned and butt against one another; or single webs are formed on the units which are embraced by bifurcated stems of the members (the adhesive in this case being applied to the members); or the units each take the form of a pair of walls only with webs arranged as shown in Fig. 9 for co-operation with stems 130 of rectangular section. |
