A reel 11 which is to carry a web 12, e.g. of paper, plastics or metal foil, is provided with a recess 13 extending over the full width of the reel; the inner end of the web 12 is folded back on itself to form a loop 15 which is received by the recess 13, and the folded-back portion 16 is coiled round the reel 11 together with the rest of the web. Thus, when the web 12 is unwound from the reel the trailing end is exposed, e.g. as shown at 19 or 19<SP>1</SP>, before the unwinding is complete, and this end is fed to a joining station for uniting with the leading end of a new web without interrupting the unwinding process (Fig. 3, not shown). The recess preferably has an S-shaped deflection surface as shown, and may be partly defined by a hinged portion of the body (Fig. 2, not shown). |
