An hydraulic shock absorber has means for remote control of the damping characteristics such that damping in the low piston velocity range is variable independently of damping of the higher velocity strokes. Said means comprises a spring-loaded control bush 17 and control piston 22 located in an enlargement of the axial bore 14 in the piston rod 3 and controlled by adjusting means located outside the shock absorber. On the upward stroke of the piston, oil flows through bore 21 and through bore 26 and valve 13 via the control space 16. The shock absorber is adjusted by a member (not shown) which applies pressure, via a medium in the bores 15, 14, on a control piston 22 which moves against spring 23 to throttle the inflow cross-section of bore 26 although a groove 27 (Fig. 2) ensures that 26 is never quite closed. For higher velocity strokes, when valve 13 is operative, the pressure on the control medium in the piston-rod bore may be increased so that the bush 17 moves against spring 19 to progressively reduce the passage crosssection of bore 21. |
