<p>Conjugated dienes (esp. butadiene) are polymerized continuously in soln. in an org. solvent, using a catalyst made by reacting a nickel or cobalt carbonyl with a halide of a metal of subgroup IV-VI in the pres. of a conjugated diene and removing all or part of the CO evolved. in a process where the diene raw material is purified before passing to the polymn, stage, by contacting it with the polymn. mixture removed from the polymn. zone and still contg. active catalyst, then removing the diene from the mixture (eg. by heating to 65 degrees C at 1 atm. press) and passing it to the polymn. zone. The still-active catalyst in the mixture reacts with the impurities in the crude diene and these then remain behind in the mixture. Use of purified raw material gives high yields of polymer. Catalyst system is known. Products are vulcanizable elastomers with m. wt. >10.000.</p> |
