<p>Zone or disc electropherograms of a substance carrying one or more functional gps. selected from NH2, monosubstd. amino, imino, SH and OH (e.g. proteins or carbohydrates) are coloured in such a way as to permit quantitative or qualitative determination of the substance by treating with a dye of the formula: S-D-X-R (I) (where S is a solubilizing gp. D is a chromophore, X is a bridging gp. separating the chromophore D and the gp. R, and R is a reactive gp. which gives the possibility of a covalent bond with the functional group(s) of the substance). The dye (I) has improved sensitivity and is taken up by the electropherogram in an amount which is directly proportional to the amount of electrophoretized substance. Electropherograms dyed with (I) have less tendency to fade than when conventional dyes are used.</p> |
