Extrusion press tooling - with asymmetrical mandrel arrangement

In an extrusion press incorporating a container for the billet, a punch, a mandrel held by a bridge and a die, the mandrel is disposed away from the central plane of the bridge when single hole profiles with asymmetrical coolant channels are extruded. In the prefd. version a hump is provided on the bridge to compensate for the uneven material flow resulting from the positioning of the mandrel. The method yields mechanically stronger sections than the conventional symmetrical die layout method.
