Dialkylhaloalkylphosphine oxides prepn - by reaction of corresp hydroxyalkyphosphine oxide with a carbonyl or oxalyl halide

Cpds. of formula: R1R2P(O)(CH2)mX (where R1 and R2 are 1-18C alkyl; X = halogen; m = 1-3), useful as intermediates, e.g. for pharmaceuticals, are prepd. by reacting R1R2P(O)(CH2)mOH with (CO)nX2 (where n = 1 or 2), pref. COCl2, esp. in an inert solvent. Unlike the prior art reaction with SOCl2, no corrosive SO2 is produced, the only waste gases being CO2 and CO.
