1324898 Graphite fibre reinforced laminates MONSANTO CO 22 June 1971 [23 June 1970] 29077/71 Heading B5N An impact-resistant laminate of fibres set in a resin matrix, e.g. an epoxy resin, comprises at least one layer of graphite fibres and at least one layer of elastic fibres having an elastic elongation to break equal to or greater than twice the elastic elongation to break of the graphite fibres, at least one surface of the laminate the outermost layer of the fibres being a layer of elastic fibres. The fibre layers comprise one or more plies in which the fibres are positioned unidirectionally, the plies being oriented in the same or different directions. The elastic fibres may be made from S- or E-glass. Metal foil layers, e.g. of aluminium, steel or titanium, may be interleaved between the graphite fibre and elastic fibre layers. The laminates may be used in aerospace vehicles and turbine blades the outermost fibre layer on the opposite side of the laminate from which impact is applied being a layer of elastic fibres. |
