1285540 Joining fibre cord ends OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 19 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 26087/71 Heading D1T Two tyre cord ends 12 and 14, which are in contacting adjacent overlapping relationship, are secured together by means of an extensible thread 16 sewn around the tyre cord ends with a zigzag stitch that does not penetrate the cords. There is a first thread 18 supplied by the needle of a sewing machine and extending in a zigzag pattern over the top of the two cords 12 and 14, and a second thread 20 supplied by the bobbin of the sewing machine and extending in a zigzag pattern over the bottom of the two cords. The thread should have an elongation property of 8-30% and the tension whilst it is being applied to the cord ends 12 and 14 is such that the thread is extended and will subsequently contract in situ to bind the cord ends together. The joint may be heated to cause the thread to shrink into place. A thread compatible adhesive may be applied to the joint and cured in situ. The thread may be nylon and the adhesive a nylon-compatible resorcinolformaldehyde latex. There may be eighteen to thirty stitches per inch and the thread may be 300 to 420 denier. |
