STROKE POSITION CONTROL MEANS

1285251 Grinding J SUNNEN 24 Aug 1970 [4 Sept 1969] 40689/70 Heading B3D Apparatus for correcting imperfections in the surface 25 of a cylindrical workpiece being honed to a cylindrical shape on a honing machine including a mandrel 22 having workpiece engaging portions thereon, means 42 for rotating the mandrel, and means for generating a pattern of reciprocating motion between the mandrel and the surface being honed, the apparatus comprising means for determining the presence of variations from a true cylindrical shape of the workpiece, and means for shifting the position of the pattern of reciprocating motion relative between the surface and mandrel in a direction to remove the variation. The reciprocating motion may be imparted to the workpiece or mandrel and the pattern of the reciprocating motion may be shifted by manual or automatic means. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the mandrel 22 is rotated by a belt-drive 44 from a motor 42 and the workpiece 24 is carried by an assembly 26 reciprocatable by a crank arm 32 driven by a motor 36 in a frame 56. An ammeter 45 is connected in the circuit of the motor 42 rotating the mandrel and if the bore of the workpiece is tapered so as to have a reduced diameter at one end, the extra load on the motor shows on the ammeter and an operator can rotate a handle 54 of a screw 55 engaging a nut 58 on the motor frame to shift the motor, and hence the pattern of reciprocating motion towards the smaller end of the bore so that that end receives more abrading than the other. In another embodiment, the shifting of the pattern of reciprocating movement is effected automatically by an integrator responsive to the load on the motor. In a further embodiment, a lever extends between a connecting rod connected to the crank and a rod connected to the workpiece support. The fulcrum of the lever is adjustable to determine the length of stroke, and the position of the patterns of reciprocating movement is varied by adjustment of the length of one of the rods. The means sensing the load on the motor for automatic control of the shifting of the pattern of reciprocating movement may consist of sensing the power factor or change of phase angle of the motor, belt tension or a pair of thermistors may be incorporated in a circuit which are responsive to the current in the motor for equal but different parts of the stroke of the movement and control a motor for shifting the pattern of the reciprocating movement.
