Apparatus for butt-welding thermoplastic sheets 5, preferably linoleum, is provided with a device 9 for forming scarfing, the abutting edges of the sheets 5 to be joined to form a slot for the reception, during welding, of a rod 4 of filler material, the device 9 comprising a nozzle 10 supplying heated gas to the abutting edges directly before the welding zone and a spring-loaded roller 11 mounted directly behind the nozzle 10 in the direction of movement of the apparatus, the roller 11 having a peripheral ridge 15, Fig. 2, which, in the operating position, forms a slot between the heated abutting edges to receive the material 4. The apparatus comprises a housing 1 to which there is secured a welding nozzle 2 and a roller 3 for laying a filler rod 4 between the abutting sheets 5. Heated air is supplied to the nozzle 2 by drawing air through a fan 7 by an electric motor 6 and passing the air over electric heaters 18 in a space 19 in the housing 1. The roller 11 is mounted on a lever 12 connected to the housing 1 by a spring 13 and suspended on a bracket 14. The ridge 15 corresponds in shape to the crosssection of the filler rod 4. |
