1365224 Determination of thyroxine MERCK PATENT GmbH 25 May 1972 [15 June 1971] 24707/72 Heading G1B Thyroxine in liquids is determined by a method comprising contacting the liquid to be tested with a cation exchange material, washing the cation exchange material, eluting the thyroxine adsorbed on it with an eluent comprising a basic solution of an oxidizing agent which is active in a basic medium and which is capable of both destroying amino groups and liberating iodine from the thyroxine, then determining iodine in the eluate. The cation exchange material may be polystyrene crosslinked with divinyl benzene and containing sulphonic acid groups or a polyacrylic acid based material. The element may be a solution of hypobromite or hypochlorite or bromine water. The iodine liberated in the eluate may be determined using reagents comprising arsenite and ceric ammonium sulphate, the standard solution comprising iodate. Analysis (test) packs for use in the method are described, and include micro columns of cation exchange resin. The method may be carried out in automatic analysis apparatus.
