<p>A flange is welded onto the end of a ductile iron pipe using a flange with a flange portion and a cylindrical hub extending from the radially inmost part of the flange portion. The length (L) of the hub is related to the nominal internal dia. (D) of the pipe to which the flange is to be jointed by the equation L = D'/n whose n is a number between 1.10 and 1.60, pref. 1.10 and 1.40 and the length units are in mm. The flange is fitted over the end of the pipe with the flange portion adjacent the end of the pipe and the hub extends along the pipe; and the free end of the hub is welded around the outer wall of the pipe. Method is used for welding ductile (spheroidal graphite) cast iron flanges onto pipes of the same material. Avoids weld failures in use.</p> |
