1386354 Aircraft AEREON CORP 12 July 1972 32678/72 Heading B7W An aircraft, particularly an airship, comprises a hull 12 of delta-shaped planform, being substantially elliptical in lateral cross-section throughout its length, the cross-section increasing in width and decreasing in height from the point of maximum height towards the rear, and having a large sweep angle A, and a negative dihedral angle r whereby roll instability resulting from the large sweep angle is reduced. Angles A and r are defined in terms of aircraft and operating parameters. The negative dihedral angle may be provided by surfaces 38, 40 at the lateral extremities which are inclined downwardly from root to tip and are swept forward, or by the hull being formed with a greater camber on its upper surface than on its lower surface, Fig. 5 (not shown). The aircraft may be heavier-than-air, or, with helium, lighter than or only slightly heavier than air. |
