The cutting surfaces of the instrument are coated with a lubricious material of low coefficient of friction such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyhexafluorpropylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene or polyethylene. Such an instrument is produced by severing a fused assembly of fibres to form the required cutting surface. The assembly may be produced by drawing an assembly of larger dimensions. The drawn fibres may have inner cores that can be removed by etching.
