A non-dusting, particulate coloring agent for plastics and the like is prepared from a finely divided pigment and an organic binder comprising a solid hexahydric alcohol with little or no affinity for water and a melting point within the range of 60 DEG to 200 DEG C. The finely divided pigment and binder are blended and cast with the aid of an aqueous carrier medium, and then heated to form a solid layer which can be broken up into flake-like particles or chunks. These flakes or chunks are not agglomerated or pelletized pigments in the usual sense of the term. The pigment in the flakes is, apparently, bound up in a solid suspension comprising an adherent film or matrix.
