Agitator 50 typically reciprocates through 90‹ at 50 to 250 cycles per minute, and details are given of optimum speed relative to slurry settling times and of relative volumes of the tank and space swept by the agitator and spacing between the drum and the agitator and tank walls. The agitator may be driven by a variable speed D.C. motor. As shown an endless porous belt 35 is entrained round the drum and supports the filter medium 38, which is a disposable length of newsprint. One hollow support shaft of the drum leads to a filtrate-extracting pump and the other shaft is connected to a drive motor (Fig. 2 not shown). |
